Mrs D Passenger, SENCo

I have been teaching at Oldway since 2001 and have experience across Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. I have previously been a Year Leader, PE Lead, ITT Mentor and am a trained facilitator of the National College Outstanding Teacher Programme and Improving Teacher Programme. I was fortunate enough to spend some time observing maths teaching in Shanghai as part of the National College England-Shanghai Maths exchange programme.

I am very much looking forward to starting my new role of SENCo at Oldway Primary School and supporting those pupils and their families who may require extra support and interventions. I have a personal interest in inclusive education and the psychology of education. I have previously worked as an Educational Psychology Assistant at Torbay Educational Psychology Service, supporting pupils and colleagues at schools across Torbay and have a Psychology Diploma.

I am the Autism Champion at Oldway and have completed Autism Education Trust Level 3 Training. I am responsible for driving forward a strategic plan for making Torbay schools ‘Autism friendly’. This role involves working closely with pupils with autism, their parents and outside agencies, to ensure that these pupils can access a flexible, relevant and meaningful curriculum in mainstream education.  I am responsible for delivering Autism training to staff to ensure that they develop an understanding of pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural needs and that teaching, communication and learning environments are adapted appropriately.

As part of this role, I have completed training and research in Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) and Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP), which has proven to be an effective method of working with children and young people with autism. I am also a trained facilitator of Lego™ therapy, which encourages positive communication and effective interactions and have conducted research into the use of FitBit™ activity bands to track heart rate and reduce anxiety levels of pupils with Autism.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family on the beautiful beaches in the Bay and walking my Cockapoo, Baxter!
