Welcome to parents/carers of Reception children starting school in September 2020

A warm welcome to our Reception parents/carers whose children are joining Oldway from September 2020.  Oldway is now full and all 90 places for Reception have been filled.  While the current restrictions due to COVID-19 make transition arrangements for preparing to start school very different this year, there are many things that are going to take place over the remainder of the summer term to prepare our new Reception children for starting school.

Welcome packs have now been sent to all parents/carers who have accepted their child's place at Oldway.  Please see below the welcome letter and welcome video.

Class Teachers will be in touch with parents/carers for their home visits by phone during June, once the children have been placed into classes. We hope to be able to make arrangements for children to visit their new teacher and new classroom before the end of term, once we have further information about widening the opening of school from 1 June 2020 onwards.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Head of School

Oldway Primary School is a member of the Riviera Education Trust which is the admissions authority responsible for the admissions policies and decisions on applications for admission. We have an admissions policy for each academic year. They are written to comply with the School Admissions Code and School Admissions Appeals Code. We take part in the co-ordinated admissions schemes of Devon County Council.

Visiting the school

Due to ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19, the 'tour of the school' for prospective nursery and reception parents will be virtual this year and a video will be on the admissions page of the school website by Friday 23 October 2020.  Applications for school places in Reception is between 1 November 2020 and 15 January 2021 through the Torbay Admissions website and expressions of interest for Oldway's nursery are due - to school - by the end of February 2021.

Applying to come here

Once you decide you would like a place in Reception or at any other time after this, you must make a formal application. You can do this by applying to the Local Authority and not direct to the school.  A fresh application must be made for children who are attending our Nursery.  applications for Nursery places are made direct to the School.  Please see further information on our Nursery Admissions link below.

For the Normal Round intake into school, children are offered places to start in Reception at the beginning of the September term after their fourth birthday. Children who are admitted to a vacancy at any time after this point are called 'In-Year' Admissions.

Appeals will not be heard at a face to face meeting. They will be heard by remote access – by video or telephone conference. Where it is not possible for a parent to take part by remote access, the appeal panel may make its decision based on the written information that is submitted.

A new deadline for appeals will be at least 28 calendar days from the date of the refusal to admit. Appeals will be heard as soon as possible after they are submitted with parents given at least 14 days’ written notice of an appeal hearing. Parents may not submit additional evidence on the day of the appeal.

Appeals at the normal round of admissions to Reception will be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals on 14 May 2021.
