New nursery and reception parents for September 2021

Oldway's information regarding virtual 'home visits' and the online, welcome meeting for new parents joining nursery and reception in September is coming out shortly!

Announcement from Torbay Council and Public Health England

22 June 2021

The Prime Minister’s decision to delay the further easing of coronavirus restrictions has brought about a review of the events that have been planned for children within Torbay Schools. Our transition events for children moving from early years to primary schools, and year 6 to secondary school, would bring together a number of children that would not normally be in the same bubble.  This type of activity brings additional risks for the transmission of the Covid 19 virus. In consultation with the Local Authority Public Health Team we have taken the decision to cancel our planned events.

Dr Lincoln Sargeant (Director of Public Health) supports this action and thanks all schools for their vigilance to risk assessing all activities and continuing to take difficult decisions that will help to manage the ongoing pandemic.

We are aware of the importance of these transition events in supporting children to feel settled and ready for the next phase of education.  We will continue to review the situation and will aim to offer additional support to pupils in their new school when the roadmap allows.

Welcome to 2020-21!

A very warm welcome to our nursery and reception children - and other new children across the school - joining Oldway for 2020-21.  We are delighted that you have chosen Oldway Primary School and we look forward to working with you, supporting your child with their education, for many years ahead.

Thinking about applying for a nursery place at Oldway for September 2021?

Oldway's nursery is for children who will be 3 years old by 31 August 2021.  It operates during school hours, term-time only.  Oldway has a 26-children per day nursery with all children starting in the September after they have turned three years of age.  Some places are full-time (30 hours) and some places are part-time (either 2 or 3 days, or mornings or afternoons).  Expressions of interest for Oldway's nursery are now being received and need to be completed (and returned to school) by Friday 12 February 2021.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Oldway Primary School is a member of the Riviera Education Trust which is the admissions authority responsible for the admissions policies and decisions on applications for admission. We have an admissions policy for each academic year. They are written to comply with the School Admissions Code and School Admissions Appeals Code. We take part in the co-ordinated admissions schemes of Devon County Council.

Applying to Oldway

Once you decide you would like a place in Reception or at any other time after this, you must make a formal application. You can do this by applying to the Local Authority and not direct to the school.  A fresh application must be made for children who are attending our Nursery.  Applications for Nursery places are made direct to the School.  Please see further information on our Nursery Admissions link below.

For the Normal Round intake into school, children are offered places to start in Reception at the beginning of the September term after their fourth birthday. Children who are admitted to a vacancy at any time after this point are called 'In-Year' Admissions.

The Local Authority

Torbay Council publishes information about admissions and its own policies to support the admissions application and appeals process. This is at https://www.torbay.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/admissions/

Applications can be made online at https://www.torbay.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/admissions/primary-place-2020/

The appeals process is detailed at www.devon.gov.uk/school-appeals

For questions about your child joining the school or just about the admissions process in general, please don’t hesitate to contact the school direct or contact Torbay on 01803 208908 or by email to pupil.services@torbay.gov.uk

You can also contact the Devon School Admissions Service on 0345 155 1019 or by email to admissions@devon.gov.uk

Our Admissions Policies

You can find our admissions policies below - we review the school policy annually and may make changes if we feel this would be in the best interests of the school and our community.

Each academic year has its own policy document, with details about how to apply for a place in school from the start of Reception through to Year 6.

School admissions policy 2020-21

This is our determined policy.  If you have any comments regarding the policy, you can contact us at the school or schoolsadmissionpolicy-mailbox@devon.gov.uk.

School admissions policy 2021-22

This is our determined policy. If you have any comments regarding the policy, you can contact us at the school or schoolsadmissionpolicy-mailbox@devon.gov.uk.

Objections can be made up to 15 May 2020 to the Office of the Schools' Adjudicator.

The Admissions Appeals Timetable 2021

Appeals at the normal round of admissions to Reception will be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals on 14 May 2021. Where the application was not made in time for a decision to be made on 16 April 2021, they will be heard within that 40-day period or, if that is not possible, within 30 days of the appeal being lodged. In-year admission appeals must be heard within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.

Consultation on our Admissions policy for 2022-23

Below you will see a link to our determined admissions policy for 2022-23. We were consulting on this between 1 November 2020 and 8 January 2021 and invited any parent or other person with an interest in our admission arrangements, to read the policy and make any comments you wish. You will see where there are changes, the text is in red – either something we propose to add or, if it has a line through it, something we propose to remove.

One of the proposals is to add children who have been adopted from state care outside of England to our oversubscription criterion 1. This is in anticipation that the Department for Education will require this change for all schools as it has just consulted on changes to the School Admissions Code. It is possible that the Department’s timescales may mean that the Code is not amended before the end of February, when we have to formally set our policy. If that is the case, we may have to determine our policy without that change and then alter it later in spring or summer. We are bringing it to your attention though as a change in policy that we expect to have to introduce.

Other than changes in red and dates moving forward a year, the way our policy will work is the same as in the previous year, 2021-22 which you can also see below.

If you have any comments, you can make them to Devon County Council which is co-ordinating the consultation. Further information is at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionarrangements. You will be able to view the proposed policies for all state-funded schools in Devon and the Local Authorities policies there too.

The consultation ends on 8 January and all policies must be determined by 28 February and published in the same places by 15 March 2021.
